Project title: co-dependency, morality, citizenship - The emergence of a category of problems and its social conditions. Project period: 2008-2010.

Diagnoses and other expert-based problem categories seem to be increasing in our time, both in numbers and range. In the wake of problem categories, new expertise and measures appears which include both the promise of relief and demands for counter performance. What does it mean to be referred to or identified as co-dependent?

The project aims to examine codependency status and development category of problems in our country on three dimensions:

  1. Meanings and uses
  2. Genealogy, establishment and institutionalization
  3. Relationship to society, culture and morality

The empirical material consists of printed texts: nonfiction literature, scholarly articles, popular science, fiction and drama as well as web material, chat sites, blogs and information about treatment options. Also interviews, testimony, therapeutic programs, etc. can be included and collected by qualitative methods.

Theoretically and methodologically, the project will involve a combination of linguistically-oriented discourse analytical traditions and more general social and institutional analysis.

The approach is wide and differentiated, while the focus of the study is narrowly confined to co-dependency as a problem category, social discourse and type.

The project is expected to lead to knowledge that is relevant to those who are classified as co-dependency and their families, but also for the experts, scientific and professional, that meet and / or using the term co-dependency.
