Master's Programme in Global Health, 120 credits

Are you interested in social, economic and health-related poverty issues and human rights? Do you want to work to reduce absolute poverty and to improve health equity? Then this is the programme for you!

The purpose of this programme is to study global health and global development from an interdisciplinary perspective so that after completing the programme, you will be able to analyse and problematise the spreading of unequal health and be able to carry out interventions.

Sustainable development, human rights and power structures related to age, gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic groups are integrated into the programme. You will be equipped with knowledge and skills that will make you suitable for a professional career within government, private and ideas-driven organisations at international, national and local level.

The programme is run in collaboration by several departments within four faculties: the School of Global Studies and the Department of Social Work from the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Department of Literature, History of Ideas and Religion from the Faculty of Arts, the Department of Economics from the School of Business, Economics and Law. The Department of Medicine is responsible for the programme.

Content

The programme comprises full-time study and is aimed at students who hold a Bachelor’s degree worth 180 credits in a social sciences/health sciences/economics/arts main area, or a professional qualification and who are interested in specialising in the field of global health. The programme is given entirely in English and has an international intake.

The courses included in the Master’s programme are:

  • Global health challenges in an interdisciplinary context, 15 HEC
  • Quantitative methods, 10 HEC
  • Qualitative methods, 5 HEC
  • Governing health and illness in a global perspective, 15 HEC
  • Global health economics, 15 HEC
  • Disease prevention and health promotion in vulnerable groups; strategies and methods, 15 HEC
  • Social epidemiology and biostatistics, 15 HEC
  • Degree project in global health, 30 HEC

Entrance requirements and application

Basic entrance requirements
In order to be accepted for the Master’s Programme in Global Health, students must meet the basic entrance requirements, hold a Bachelor’s degree worth 180 credits in a social sciences/health sciences/economics/arts main area or equivalent and English B/English 6 at upper secondary level or equivalent IELTS 6.5 where no section may be less than 5.5, or TOEFL 575 points, TWE 4.5 points.

Selection
Letter of application stating previous education, any work experience, and reasons for applying to the programme, and a brief statement of the applicant’s plans for the future.

Tuition fees

Swedish and foreign students who are citizens of an EU country are not charged tuition fees. Students from countries outside the EU pay a fee of SEK 134,700 per academic year.

Students from partner universities, where formal agreements have been signed, are exempt from course fees. Students from countries outside the EU will be able to apply for a grant, in competition with other applicants.

Application

Admissions are made every autumn term.

Apply via antagning.se latest 15 April if you have a Swedish Bachelor’s degree.

Apply via universityadmission.se latest 15 January if you have an international Bachelor’s degree.
