Meet Lilian - Erasmus Mundus Master's Programme in Social Work (MFAMILY)

The Lilian that left Ghana two years ago is not the same today. I have achieved knowledge and skills that will enable me to make an impact in the area of social work

- The specialization in families and children appealed to me, as well as the opportunity to get multiple field experiences. The beautiful thing is that it also took me to three different countries!

After finishing her bachelor’s degree in social work with sociology from the University of Ghana in 2006, Lilian Amankwa was convinced she loved social work and that she wanted to learn more about social welfare systems and gain some international exposure in social work.

- I knew Sweden has well-developed social welfare system and I was curious to find out more. I also needed a full scholarship and the MFAMILY programme was a perfect programme for me. When I received the admissions document and saw my name first on the list of accepted students, the word “happy” is an understatement.

- It has been a tremendous experience to say the least. I have gained new perspectives on a lot of things. The Lilian that left Ghana two years ago is not the same today. I have achieved knowledge and skills that will enable me to make an impact in the area of social work in Ghana, says Lilian.

The different field placements throughout the programme have been especially valuable.

- I was at a youth center helping young people stay away from the streets and connect with peers in a positive way. I really enjoyed it and it would be interesting to develop similar ideas in Ghana.

Being a student in the MFAMILY programme means studying at an advanced academic level. At times, it has been a bit overwhelming, Lilian says, but today she is proud of her achievement and feels equipped with recent research and methods of analyisis. In the future, she would like to give consultancy to governments and NGO:s.

- This experience will remain a valuable asset for me on that journey.
