About Linda Lane

Introduction
Linda Lane is a lecturer at the Department of Social Work. She is also active as a teacher and tutor at the Centre for European Studies and the Department of Global Studies.

Linda Lane defended her thesis in economic history in 2004, at the University of Gothenburg. The dissertation, Trying To Make A Living, Studies in the economic life of women in interwar Sweden, is a study of Swedish women’s emergence into economic citizenship during the interwar period. The dissertation presents and discusses women's livelihood strategies from a gender and class perspective.

Lane has had assignments as an invited presenter at among others, se2009.eu, High Level Meeting of the Permanent Intergovernmental Group L'Europe de l'Enfance and Small Nations and Regions in the Fight Against Poverty in Europe, The Poverty Alliance.

In 2007 she was commissioned to evaluate a training scheme for the municipality of Gothenburg (2007) and in 2010, together with Professor Margareta Bäck-Wiklund develop a proposal for an action plan for University of Gothenburg’s family policy program.

Research interest
Linda Lane's research focuses people's strategies for coping with the multiple worlds of family, community and work a research field often discussed as work-life balance if the research entails studying individuals’ strategies to achieve a satisfactory mix or combination of these worlds; or work-life conflict when the research goes beyond mere balancing in an attempt to understand the underlying conflicts and competing demand of each world, in time and strain that affect individuals’ satisfaction with their quality of work, community and life and well-being.

Between 2006 and 2009 Lane worked in the research project QUALITY - Quality of Life in a changing Europe, 6th FP EU project whose goal was to collect and analyze comparative data on the social well-being and quality of life in eight European countries.

Current research
Lane's research currently has two directions. The first is a continued interest in the competing demands of work, community and life but with a focus on low skilled and low income earners. The second orientation focuses marginalized groups' access to employment.

Teaching
Lane is course director for the Masters course "Social Europe", International Masters in European Studies at the Center for European Studies and the course "Poverty and livelihood issues", Social Work Programme, Department of Social Work. She also teaches on topics social policy, welfare policy and social work, the history of the Swedish welfare state and EU family policies. She is an experienced tutor and examiner of bachelor and master's theses.
