About Stefan Szücs

Background and research interests
PhD (1998) with a thesis on democratic leadership within the framework of the international research program Democracy and Local Governance (DLG), and is currently working with research on public sector reform and governance in relation to health, democracy and sustainable growth. By the survey KOMINNOVA (Community innovation, reform and reorganization) performed in 2004, 2008 and 2012, involving the leading politicians, administrators and union representatives in all the 290 Swedish local governments, Szücs investigates the impact of organizational change on social work. Completed research projects include:


• 1998-2001 Work, public management, and democracy: Local public sector working life, funded by RALF
• 2000-2003 Democracy and Local Governance in Transition? A Swedish/Comparative European Study, funded by RJ
• 2003-2005 Public sector employees in innovative municipals, funded by SKL/VINNOVA
• 2006-2009 Urban innovation and local variation in long-term sick leave, funded by FAS
• 2006-2009 Quality of life in a changing Europe, EU 6th Framework Program
• 2007-2010 Local and regional cooperation on innovation and economic growth, financed by VINNOVA and others.
• 2009-2011 Organizational conditions for public management – Good work and institutional performance in the public sector (CHEFiOS), funded by VINNOVA.
• 2011-2014 Pathways to Healthy Organizations – Sustainable Public Sector Managerial Change, funded by AFA Insurance.
Current reseach
• 2014- Strategic cooperation in complex elder care – Effective forms of implementation, The Swedish Institute for Health Sciences.
• 2015-2017 System overload: Survival strategies in the Swedish public sector, funded by FORTE.
• 2014-2019 Sustainable workforce, EU 7th Framework program, ERC, National Research Partner.
• 2017-2019 The social service agencies that became auditees - On the meaning, use and consequences of Open Comparisons in the municipal social services, funded by FORTE.


Teaching and tutoring
Szücs is course director, master level, in Research Methods (SW2373), Organization, cooperation, profession and power (SW2232), Leadership (SW2333) and advanced level, in Organization and management (SQ5174), doctoral student tutor, and develops commissioned education in governance and management in relation to public sector innovation, productivity and effectiveness. He has previously been involved in education in courses of public policy/administration and comparative politics in political science at the department of political science, University of Gothenburg.

Main publications
Szücs has published in Governance, Local Government Studies, European Planning Studies, The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and various Swedish journals. His most recent international book publications include Democracy in the Head (Doctoral Dissertation), Local Elites, Political Capital and Democratic Development: Governing Leaders in Seven European Countries (first editor, Springer), and “Quality of life and satisfaction with work-life balance” in the book Quality of Life and Work in Europe: Theory, Practice and Policy (Palgrave Macmillan).
